Speech Delivery: Importance Of Enunciation And Pronunciation

As a potential speaker, you should be interested in enunciation and pronunciation for these reasons: first, as a representative of a profession, you will want to appear as an educated, scientific person; second, you will want to have your own personality evaluated as highly as possible, and, third, and most important, you must use acceptable pronunciation and distinct articulation in meeting your personal, social and professional communication needs. In other words, good diction is good public relations for you and your profession.

Distinct enunciation and correct pronunciation are valuable aids to the enhancing of the communication of the speaker and to

the creation of impression, interest, and attention on the audience. Hence, pay careful attention to your enunciation and pronunciation.

Enunciation is the distinctness with which words are uttered. If words are clearly formed, they are easily recognized; if they are muffled and indistinct, they create a confusion of sounds. Poor clarity makes it almost impossible to understand a speaker and denotes mental slovenliness which decreases

the speaker's prestige. Distinct enunciation helps the audience to understand the speaker better and tends to approve his statements when they are clearly enunciated.

Pronunciation, which includes articulation, is the particular combination of sound. Pronunciation is determined by standard usage of words and by the dictionaries. While there may be variations in pronunciation of them as established by different dictionaries, it is up to the speaker to choose alternatives of pronunciation of words according to the demands of his speaking situation.

Obviously, communication is strengthened by distinct enunciation and by attention to pronunciation. Distorted, inaccurate enunciation acts as a barrier to communication while mispronunciations cause words to be confused and can lead to costly errors in comprehension.

You cannot afford to neglect these factors as important to communication. Through constant practice on clear, distinct enunciation and correct pronunciation, you can be an effective communicator of ideas and information.
